Same-day urgent care in Bluefield, Virginia

Urgent care is medical care for illnesses and injuries that need attention soon but are not life-threatening. Examples include a fever, sore throat, ear pain, urinary symptoms, a sprain or a small cut. At Westwood Family Medicine, urgent visits are available Monday through Saturday, often the same day.

What can urgent care treat?

We see patients of all ages for common problems that need care soon, such as:

  • Colds, flu, COVID-19 and sore throats
  • Fevers, coughs and sinus infections
  • Ear pain and pink eye
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Rashes, bug bites and minor allergic reactions
  • Sprains, strains and minor injuries
  • Small cuts and minor burns
  • Vomiting or diarrhea in someone who can keep fluids down

Urgent care or the emergency room?

Urgent care is a good fit when you need to be seen soon but your life or a limb is not in danger. The emergency room is for serious or life-threatening problems. If you are unsure, call us and we will help you decide. If it could be an emergency, do not wait: call 911.

A simple way to think about it: if you would normally call your doctor but cannot wait days for an appointment, urgent care is the right place. If the problem is sudden, severe or getting worse fast, choose the emergency room.

Why get urgent care from your own doctor?

When you come to us for urgent care, the doctor treating you has access to your history, medicines and past results. That can mean fewer repeated questions, safer prescribing and easier follow-up. It also keeps your records in one place.

Patients in Bluefield who are new to the practice are welcome too.

How do I get an urgent visit?

Call us as early in the day as you can. We see urgent visits Monday through Saturday, and on Saturdays the clinic is open for urgent care only. Some concerns can also be handled by telehealth, so ask whether a video visit is an option.

What happens after an urgent visit?

Most minor illnesses and injuries improve with the right treatment and some rest. Before you leave, Dr. Le will explain how to care for yourself at home, what signs mean you should call back, and whether you need a follow-up visit.

If a sickness keeps coming back, or an injury is slow to heal, a follow-up visit can help find out why. For example, repeated joint pain may point to a problem that can be treated with physical therapy, osteopathic manipulation or a joint injection.

What to expect at your visit

  1. Call us to describe the problem and get a time.
  2. We check your vital signs when you arrive.
  3. Dr. Le examines you and may do a quick test, such as a strep or flu test, if needed.
  4. You leave with a treatment plan and clear advice on when to follow up.

Common questions about urgent care

Do I need an appointment for urgent care?

Please call before you come in. We will ask a few questions about what is going on and find you a time, often the same day. Calling first also lets us tell you if the emergency room would be a safer choice.

Is urgent care open on Saturday?

Yes. Westwood Family Medicine is open on Saturdays for urgent care only. Urgent visits are also available Monday through Friday. Check our hours before coming in, and call ahead so we can plan for your visit.

When should I go to the ER instead of urgent care?

Go to the ER or call 911 for anything that could be life-threatening, such as chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke symptoms, severe bleeding, a serious injury or a seizure. Urgent care is best for problems that need attention soon but are not dangerous.

Can children be seen for urgent care?

Yes. As a family medicine practice, we see children, adults and older adults for urgent problems such as fevers, ear pain, sore throats and minor injuries. For babies and young children with signs of serious illness, such as trouble breathing or being very hard to wake, call 911.
